Beaver Co. School Board Comes Under Fire For Revoking Teachers' Contract

BEAVER FALLS (KDKA) -- The decision to revoke a new teachers' union contract in a local school district has resulted in a public outcry.

There was a school board meeting Thursday night where the district got an earful of mostly complaints.

The Blackhawk School District, in Beaver County, has come under heavy criticism after the new majority on the board held a special meeting last Friday, and voted to rescind the contract with the teachers' union, which was approved by the board last September.

The four-board members who voted for the new contract last year were replaced by the new members who believe the district can't afford the new deal.

Jarrod McCowin, the president of the Blackhawk Education Association, was among those in the packed crowd that spoke at Thursday night's meeting.

To the cheers of the audience, McCowin said, "It's a fair deal, it's a done deal."

The union represents about 275 teachers.

Kelly Compeau, of the Pa. State Education Association, said that the union earlier Thursday filed an unfair labor practice charge against the Blackhawk School Board of Directors with the Labor Relations Board.
