Hometown Olympian Makes History In Sochi
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - She is now only the fifth athlete in Olympic history to medal in both the winter and summer games. Lauryn Williams captured silver in Sochi in the women's two-man bobsledding event.
She joined The KDKA Morning News with Larry Richert and John Shumway to talk about her experience.
Williams came so close to winning a gold medal, only missing it by .10 seconds. However, coming home with a silver wasn't all bad.
"It was awesome," Williams said. "You got to be proud and look at the bright side at the end."
She admits that she wanted to win the gold, but that the journey to the games was something to be proud of.
Prior the last run Williams told her partner, Elana Meyers, how to react when they crossed the finish line. She told her that they would be celebrating all the hard work and preparation no matter what their finishing time was.
Williams, a graduate of Rochester High School in Beaver County says her family and friends held watch parties. There are four states that "claim" Williams as their own but she says she's from here.
"I graduated from Rochester, so that's my hometown," she said.
What's next for Williams? She says she isn't sure yet.
"I felt like I was going to be done but it's only been three or four days and I'm already missing the girls. So, I think it's going to be a little harder to walk away than I thought," says Williams.
Williams says that she thinks everyone can try bobsledding.
"I encourage other people to try bobsled even though there's not one in your backyard," she said.
"I'm looking forward to seeing everybody in Beaver County and the Pittsburgh area and celebrating," she said.
