SOUTH STRABANE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- Three people were injured in a multi-vehicle pileup this afternoon in near white-out conditions along Interstate 79 in Washington County.

The crash happened just before noon in the northbound lanes of I-79 near Mile Marker 42 in South Strabane Township.

According to state police, heavy snow was falling and strong winds were blowing at the time.

Police say it all started when a utility truck couldn't stop, and then hit into a tractor trailer and another car.

In all, 12 vehicles were involved in the chain reaction crash.

The three people who were injured were taken by ambulance to local hospitals.

They suffered moderate to serious injuries.

The crash caused traffic in the area to slow for a time this afternoon.

The investigating continues.
