Storm Brings Treacherous Road Conditions

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – In most areas, officials are calling for people to stay off the roads.

Continuous snow for much of Sunday left treacherous road conditions and drivers were urged to stay home if possible.

There is concern that roads could freeze again overnight.

"The streets are treated ... but there is going to be some water freezing over to ice," said Guy Costa with Pittsburgh Public Works. "So we ask people to take extra time tomorrow, especially along secondary routes. It's going to take us some time to get secondary routes."

City officials say all roads should be treated within 36 hours, but it could leave a slightly messy commute come Monday morning.

Turnpike officials issued a winter weather warning due to the snow and slick roads.

All portions of the Turnpike are affected by the warning.

Officials say extra crews are working make sure the roadways are safe. However, as a safety precaution, the speed limit has been reduced to 45 miles per hour.

Late Sunday night, Allegheny County officials closed the McKeesport-Duquesne Bridge because of an accident and ice on the road.

Hempfield and Sewickley townships have also issued travel restrictions, asking people to stay off the roads during the storm.

Monongalia County in West Virginia also declared a state of emergency because of severe weather in their area.

Monongalia County Officials say the snow has caused many accidents and hazardous conditions.

It's also led to the closure of WVU's main campus and the cancellation of classes Monday.
Classes are expected to resume as normal Tuesday.
