New Castle Coach Ralph Blundo Discusses WPIAL Three-Peat

PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- The New Castle boys basketball team won their third straight WPIAL title (second straight in Class AAAA) Saturday night, defeating Hampton 55-49 for the WPIAL Class AAAA championship.

Coach Ralph Blundo told John Phillips that their success is a combination of factors.

"You have to have good players. If you have really good players who care about one another and play extraordinarily hard, then you can do special things. That's kind of what's happened," Blundo said. "We've been able to build a culture of toughness and kids that care about one another and play hard for one another, and you add talent to the mix and it's a recipe for success."

Next up for New Castle is the state playoffs. Phillips asked about getting to Hershey, the site of the state title game. But Blundo would not look too far ahead.

"It's one game at a time. To think about Hershey at this time would be irresponsible," Blundo said. "Right now, we're going to enjoy this WPIAL championship for another day, and then really focus on practice, breaking down the Hampton film and our next opponent, and moving forward."
