Crews Work To Assemble Schenley Plaza Carousel
OAKLAND (KDKA) – In a sign that spring is returning to Oakland, crews are setting up the PNC carousel in Schenley Plaza.
After a long winter hibernation, the animals are back.
An elephant, a rabbit, even a sea dragon. A total of 16 animals are out of storage and ready to take their spots on the Victorian-style carousel in Oakland's Schenley Plaza.
"It takes a day to load our trailers, then we transport them over here early in the morning and it will take another day to put all the animals on and then a few days of cleaning and going through all the inspection process," Phillip Gruszka with the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy said.
All of the work takes a small team of people.
Just lifting the animals is a challenge. Then, the crew has to make sure everything is lined up perfectly.
Thousands of people enjoy the ride in the spring, summer, and fall.
"June, July, August, and you see all the little ones on the ride, it makes all the work worthwhile," Gruszka said.
Several Pittsburghers stopped by to see the carousel being put together piece-by-piece.
Michelle Elgersma even snapped some pictures.
"I think it's really cool. I just like carousels and the animals and just the artistic part of it. It's neat," Elgersma said.
There is still a lot of work to do with the animals, but the carousel will open to the public on Monday, April 14 at noon.
