PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) – Pitt Men’s Head Basketball Coach Jamie Dixon joined “The Cook and Poni Show” from Arlington, Texas the site for tonight’s National Championship Game to look back at this season and preview tonight’s contest.
The guys asked him his thoughts on the arena hosting tonight’s game – the huge spectacle built by Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones.
“It’s a little big for a basketball game, but it’s an unbelievable place,” Dixon said.
Dixon tells the guys that seeing this match up tonight between a No. 7 seed in UConn playing a No. 8 seed in Kentucky for the National Championship shows teams like Pitt that they might not be that far away.
“You see two teams that were not even in the tournament last year,” Dixon said. “It really opens the door for people to believe they have a chance next year.”
Dixon says the goal is to always win a championship and this year did not go as well as planned for his Pitt Panthers. He tells the guys that there is nothing wrong with setting the standards high. He says he always wants a program that could win 26 games every year and not be content unless it ends up being enough to win a title.
“We are at the point now where we are never going to be satisfied,” Dixon said. “We want to win every game. We expect to.”
Dixon says he expects this team moving forward to be a dominant force in the ACC, like they were in the Big East.
He also tells the guys that the ACC has the teams and the resources to be the best conference in the country.
UConn, a former Big East rival, will be a surprise team in the national title game tonight.
“They are a unique story,” Dixon said. “They are a seventh seeded team that was written off. They have two point guards that are unique and they got hot at the right time.”
Kentucky will be back to the title game for the second time in the last three years and they have done it with the one-and-done model which many have taken issue with. The guys wanted Coach Dixon’s thoughts on it.
“It doesn’t matter what we think because the players hold all the cards on that,” Dixon said. “I like the baseball system. If you get drafted and are ready to go out of high school, then you should be allowed to go.”
