Ike Davis: A Big Hit In Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH (93-7 THE FAN) – Ike Davis hasn't even been in Pittsburgh for a week but he is already making a good impression on teammates and Pirates fans.

In just 3 games with the Bucs, Davis has hit safely in each game going 5-for-13 with a double, four RBI and a grand slam.

Despite breaking his bat on the big hit that helped push the Pirates to a 6-5 win over the Reds, he notched his second grand slam of the season, both against Cincinnati, making Davis the first player in Major League history to hit a grand slam for two different teams in the same season before the end of April.

"I hope those keep coming," Davis said. "Hopefully I'll mix some other ones in too, maybe some solo or two run shots would be nice as well."

The Pirates acquired Davis through a trade on Friday and he says he's a fan of his new club and ballpark.

"It's (PNC Park) beautiful and it's definitely a little smaller than Citi Field, so I like that especially at right field," Davis said.

As far as Clint Hurdle goes, Davis said they've only had time to talk a little bit, but he likes what he sees so far from the skipper.

"It seems like he's definitely a players' manager, and cares and he's positive and that's all you can ask for," Davis said.

In just four days, Davis hasn't been lacking excitement with his new squad. He's played in a 14-inning game, hit a grand slam and has been part of a bench-clearing brawl with the Milwaukee Brewers.

"That was crazy, I didn't know what was going on," Davis said. "Obviously I haven't played the Brewers that much because they weren't in our division in my career but obviously there is more there than I knew just because I haven't been in this division very long."

As a result of the brawl, Brewers backup catcher Martin Maldonado was suspended five games and outfielder Carlos Gomez was suspended for three, according to the MLB. For the Pirates, Travis Snider was suspended for two games, and catcher Russell Martin for one.

Davis said he wasn't surprised to hear about Maldonado's suspension but as far as his teammates go, he doesn't think they did much wrong.

"Travis was just protecting a teammate he didn't ever throw a punch or anything and Russell got upset when he saw Travis got hit but he didn't throw a punch or do anything either so who knows we'll see what happens," Davis said.
