Woman Killed in Fire that Destroys Home In Heidelberg

HEIDELBERG (KDKA) -- The Allegheny County Fire Marshal and Allegheny County Police are heading up the investigation into the cause of a fast-moving house fire in Heidelberg.

The home is located in the 600-block of Garfield Avenue.

Firefighters began dousing the flames around 6:50 p.m.

The body of a woman who lived in the home, Patricia Walls, was found late last night inside the home.

Her son, Darren, was rescued from the rooftop of the burning home by neighbor Ron Mixter.

He told KDKA-TV's Ralph Iannotti he grabbed his ladder and ran across the street, and helped the man down from the rooftop.

Mixter said he got hold of Walls' ankles and pulled him down because Walls was afraid to come down the ladder alone.

Walls climbed onto the roof from a second-floor window.

"The house kept burning, burning and burning," another neighbor Jake Hymes said. "I have never seen anything like it before."
