Antiques Up For Auction In Troy Hill As New Owner Has Plans For Old Shop

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The old antique shop on Rialto Street on Troy Hill had been closed for years when neighborhood newcomer Evan Mirapaul decided to buy it.

He not only purchased the Yankee Peddler shop, but the thousand or so items that came with it.

He says those relics include, "An old time manual coffee grinder. You put the beans in here. You grind it by hand. The ground coffee would come out here," he finishes, opening a tiny drawer.

"Once I bought it and started to work in it, I don't know how many neighbors stopped by and said, 'Wow, I remember when this was a market,' or 'I remember when this was a bakery,'" he said.

The new owner has new plans for the old shop.

"It's important for a neighborhood to have a meeting place. And I always thought it would be nice for Troy Hill to have some kind of café or bakery, and I thought that this would be a great place for it," said Mirapaul.

An auction Saturday, starting at 9 a.m., will sell off hundreds of items.

Auctioneer Mark Barkley says buyers collect memories of childhood.

"It's just neat stuff, neat stuff that you had when you were a kid," he said.

Everything must go to make room in what was once a community gathering place.

"I like that, said the owner, "and I hope it can be that again."
