Man Prompts Hours-Long Standoff In Brighton Heights

BRIGHTON HEIGHTS (KDKA)- A man is in custody after prompting a five-hour standoff with police and SWAT overnight.

Police were called to a home in Brighton Heights Friday morning for a man with mental issues who had a gun.

Officers were called to the 3300 block of Fleming Avenue around 1:45 a.m.

The man barricaded himself inside a home. It was reported he had a gun and was demanding to speak to the "feds" and the FBI, saying he would kill anyone who came to his house.

"That, of course, did not happen," said Pittsburgh Police Spokesperson Sonya Toler, "because he threatened that if anyone approached his residence, he would kill them."

At another point, he threatened to blow up the house with natural gas.

"He made a threat that he would blow up the block with natural gas," said Toler. "So what we did was have the gas turned off."

S.W.A.T. was called to the scene and still had the building surrounded as of 5:30 a.m.

Negotiators were able to get the man out of the house just after 6 a.m. using several non-lethal shots and a flash bang.

Frantic member of the man's family also had to be kept away by police.

The man has not been identified, no word on if he will face any charges.
