ATV Crash Claims Boy's Life In Washington County

AMWELL TOWNSHIP (KDKA)- State Police are looking into a deadly ATV crash in Amwell Township, Washington County.

Police say 13-year-old Anthony Maffio, and 16-year-old Jax Stock were riding the Yamaha Wolverine 4x4 around 11:45 p.m. on Thursday.

KDKA's Bob Allen Reports:

They were headed south on Shipe Run Road when the ATV went off the road and hit a tree stump.

That caused the ATV to lose control and strike several other trees along the road.

Both boys were thrown from the ATV.

Police say Maffio was killed in the accident.

Stock was flown to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital where he is listed in fair condition.

Neighbor Linda Shipe says Maffio was a fun loving kid who loved the outdoors.

She says he will be sadly missed in the neighborhood.

"It's devastating," she said. "I know the family, they're just really nice people, would do anything for anybody. Anthony, he was even going to help us put up hay this year and I'm going to really miss him."

Both teens were students in the Trinity School District.

KDKA's Trina Orlando Reports:

Grief counselors are on hand at Trinity Middle School where Maffio was in the eighth grade.

"Anthony was a great kid. He was well liked by a lot of students in the school. We're going to miss him," said Pete Keruskin, the principal at the middle school. "It's a tragic loss to our school, school district and our school community."

State police are investigating.

Investigators say the teens were not wearing helmets or other protective gear at the time of the crash
