1st Local GetGo To Sell Beer Opens In Elizabeth

ELIZABETH (KDKA) - Giant Eagle opened its first GetGo convenience store to offer a selection of various beers Monday morning.

The grand opening of the Elizabeth store was held around 9 a.m.

The store offers an in-store selection of craft, domestic, and imported beer.

"Customers in other areas where we have GetGo stores including Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland have long appreciated the additional convenience of being able to purchase beer," Giant Eagle spokesperson Daniel Donovan said in a statement. "We look forward to bringing our made-fresh-to-order food menu to our new Elizabeth location, and are excited to bring a wide variety of domestic, craft and imported beers to our Pennsylvania GetGo customers for the first time."

Customers are on board with the idea too.

"This brings a lot to the community, raises the bar, lot of value to the area," Bill Hart said.

It's the first time this side of the Laurel Highlands that beer has been offered at a convenience store.

"I think it's about darn time," said Tim Babyak of Perryopolis. "Pennsylvania is finally coming into the 20th century."

To qualify as a restaurant, the GetGo has to offer prepared foods and identify a boundary line in the middle of the store with seating for at least 30 and a dedicated cash register for beer sales.

The walk-in beer cave is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
