Local MMA Fighter Mike Wilkins Is Looking To Make Most Of His Shot

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) - Mike Wilkins was looking for a place to extend his collegiate wrestling career six years ago and he found it in the form of mixed martial arts.

"You look for another outlet to use your wrestling and MMA is the perfect avenue for that," Wilkins said.

He says that the sport of mixed martial arts has evolved to the point where you have to know all aspects and fighting styles but wrestling still has the upper hand.

Wilkins has not only extended his wrestling career but has put himself in the main event at the "Gladiators of the Cage: The North Shore Rise to Power 5" at Stage AE on June 14.

Wilkins (3-1) will face Eric Calderon who also has a 3-1 record.

Wilkins says it's hard to climb the ladder in this sport so you have to make sure you are looking for match-ups you can win against fighters with a great resume.

"You got to be very smart," Wilkins said. "You don't just want to fight anybody. You want to fight against guys that can propel you."

Wilkins thinks if he can win this upcoming fight it will be the boost he needs.

"My opponent is also 3-1, but he has a great resume. His last win was over a UFC fighter," Wilkins said. "A win over him would allow me to steal his momentum."

Wilkins/Calderon highlights a card of 13 fights that will begin at 7 p.m. on June 14 at Stage AE. Doors Open at 6 p.m.
