Jordy Mercer: Had A Lot Of Support During Struggles

PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)-Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer joined Bob Pompeani Saturday morning after hitting .500 with two home runs over the last week. Mercer told Pompeani that struggling in the majors this season was new territory for him.

"I had a lot of supporting cast, I had a lot of people that had faith in me, that kept faith in me, kept believing in me, and knowing that I can do it because I did it before," Mercer said. "Now it's starting to turn for me and things are going well, so I'm just trying to stay with the process and keep grinding, keep going."

Mercer said that he talked with Clint Hurdle a couple of times during his slump, and Hurdle reassured him.

"To be able to have a manager like that that will set you down and tell you, that really gets you some confidence," Mercer said.

Mercer said that the team is starting to play their best baseball of the season right now.

"We have a lot of baseball left to play. I think we're right where we want to be. Obviously, you want to be in first place, but I think we're playing our best ball now, and who knows what can happen a couple of months down the road," Mercer said.
