Tree Slams Into Richland Township Home

RICHLAND TOWNSHIP (KDKA)- A couple woke up to quite a surprise early Tuesday morning when a tree came slamming into their home.

The tree fell onto the home along Greenspring Drive in Richland Township around 2:30 a.m.

Wes and Angel Dias said that it sounded liked a long, prolonged clap of thunder. Initially, they thought their cat may have knocked something down.

However, when they looked, they noticed a tree came through part of the top two floors of their split-level house.

The large tree hit the entire back of the house, falling into three rooms. The bathroom and patio were destroyed and the kitchen was heavily damaged. The couple also had damage to their bedroom and cracks in the walls throughout the house.

The good news is the couple was not hurt. They are working with their insurance company to see how to pay for the repairs.

Timothy Haseleu with Erie Insurance Group says if a tree falls in your yard or your property, it's the homeowner's responsibility to pay for it.

"So looks like this family will have to foot the bill," he said.

It appears the tree was rotted, which forced it to fall over. It took part of another tree with it too. The tree was not even on the Dias' property.
