PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) – After playing a key role in the Pirates 4-3, 12 inning victory over the Cincinnati Reds, Pirates shortstop Clint Barmes joined Dan Zangrilli and Kevin Orie to talk about the victory and the difference in this team since they called up electric rookie Gregory Polanco.
On Polanco, Barmes says he’s done a good job of handling the transition from AAA to the majors and making a major impact.
“It’s been exciting,” Barmes said. “He’s brought a lot of energy from the first day he showed up with us. He’s a good kid with obviously a ton of talent and he knows how to play. It’s not been too much for him or anything he can’t handle. He goes up there, he gives us quality at-bats. Obviously, the skills he has, he’s got a chance to do it for a long time and do something very special. With what he’s done for this club, stepping in and just leading off for us, getting on base, scoring runs, knocking runs in, he’s obviously been a big part and is gonna continue to be a big part for this team.”
When it comes to the role Barmes has played this year, he hasn’t been in an everyday role, but talked about what the keys have been for him when it comes to making the most of the opportunities he has been given.
“My whole career has just been trying to make sure that when I get an opportunity I take advantage, and when I’m asked to do anything that I’m ready,” Barmes said. “So far it’s been good, and I definitely couldn’t complain with the routine that I’ve got and the at bats that I’ve gotten up to this point, so any way I can help, I’m definitely excited to try and get the opportunity.”
