Gabe Kapler: Too Early To Tell If Alvarez Having Down Year

PITTSBURGH (KDKA 93-7 The Fan)- Fox Sports 1 Baseball Analyst Gabe Kapler joined Bob Pompeani Saturday.

Kapler talked about the drop in power from Pedro Alvarez, but it's not as significant as people think.

"This is not a guy that is scuffling terribly as it relates to his power production. It just doesn't look as glaring as it did last year," Kapler said. "Baseball's not meant to be looked at in small sample sizes. We want to look at them over long periods of time. We just haven't seen enough baseball yet to determine if Pedro Alvarez is having a down year. There will be a time when we'll look up and this guy will be close to 30 home runs."

Gregory Polanco has been with the Pirates for only a couple of weeks. While the defensive metrics don't show it yet, Kapler said Polanco's already the best defensive outfielder.

"I think he's their best defensive outfielder. That's saying a lot, too, because [Starling] Marte is a stud. Yes, this is the best defensive outfield in baseball," Kapler said.

Pompeani asked Kapler his thoughts on Rule 7.13, which prevents catchers from blocking home plate. Kapler thinks that it's a flawed rule, but it will be fixed.

"They will address it. It's going to be the offseason when they do, so we're going to have to live with it for about three or four more months and through the postseason, but at some point, we're going to get it right, just like we got instant replay right," Kapler said.
