2-Alarm Fire Damages Sturgeon Home

STURGEON (KDKA) – A two-alarm fire caused some severe damage to a home in Sturgeon Monday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the fire started around 7:30 a.m. on McVey Street.

"A lot of smoke billowing out the windows and about five minutes later, a bunch of flames started squirting out the windows and that's when all the fire department and our brave guys showed up here," Scott Bishop, a neighbor, said.

Bishop was one of the first to notice the fire.

"I ran up, made sure nobody was home and I notified the lady that owns the home and we hurried up and called 911," Bishop said.

Fortunately, no one was inside.

In fact, the family was staying with a relative because of electrical problems that surfaced at the home last week.

"They had an electrician looking at it. They were supposed to be able to move back in today, and obviously that's not going to happen. We're not sure what caused the problem yet. There was supposed to be no power to the house," Bishop said.

A fire marshal is looking into the cause.

As for firefighters on the scene, there were some tense moments that forced them to get out of the house.

"We did an evacuation. We were trying to get a water supply when we initially pulled up. We drained our initial tank and we were waiting on mutual aid to arrive to provide us with water. So, we did basically an evacuation of the structure initially and then as soon as we got a good water supply, we went back in with an attack," Sturgeon Volunteer Fire Department Chief Craig Delaney said.

There are no reported injuries.
