Man Fights Attacker With Sword Using BBQ Brush Over $6 Walmart Card

NORTH UNION TOWNSHIP (KDKA) - Police in Fayette County arrested a man for allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend's husband with a sword.

Shane Landon Tyson claims his ex-girlfriend, Stephanie Ann Workman, still had a $6 Walmart card belonging to him and went to her home in North Union Township to get it back. Workman says the two started arguing about the bank card and their past relationship.

Police say Workman's husband, Chad Eric Workman, woke up when he heard the two yelling and asked Tyson to leave the property.

According to the criminal complaint, Chad Workman told police that Tyson took out a sword in a bamboo case.

"It was surreal and unreal, that's the only way I could put it," he said.

Workman and his wife Stephanie were sleeping inside their motor home when, according to police, Tyson came knocking.

"I heard a slight knock at the door, I heard a man screaming out here ... screaming obscenities at my wife," Workman said.

Workman grabbed some nearby barbecue equipment – a grill brush/spatula that he used to defend himself.

"I'm thinking, what am I going to do?" he said. "The only thing I grabbed is a spatula."

Tyson allegedly took the sword out of its case and struck Chad Workman.

Workman says he had to get a dozen stitches and was beaten pretty badly. However, he said he had one shot and he took it.

"Once across the head," Workman said. "That's all it took."

He says God brought him through and in this case, the brush is mightier than the sword.

Tyson then stumbled back to his car and was arrested by troopers. He remains free on a $15,000 bond and is charged with aggravated assault and several other counts.
