Police: Man Steals $300, Jumps Off 10th St. Bridge To Avoid Arrest

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A man was arrested Sunday after allegedly stealing money from a man's pocket then jumping off a bridge, leading police on an overnight search.

Police say just after midnight police were called to E. Carson Street after a man said that 27-year-old Evan Thornton ripped off his pocket containing $300 and ran away.

Police say Thornton ran to the 10th Street Bridge and jumped off the side when he saw a patrol car, falling about 50 feet.

Thornton then allegedly texted a woman asking her to call for a jitney, but she called 911 instead.

Police say Thornton was spotted by River Rescue along the shore of the Monongahela River just after 3:30 a.m.

During the search, an officer also suffered a broken ankle.

Thornton was arrested and charged with robbery. He also had an outstanding warrant and bench warrant.

He is currently in the Allegheny County Jail.
