2 Killed In Westmoreland Co. Crash

EAST HUNTINGDON TWP. (KDKA)- Two people have died after a violent crash Tuesday morning in Westmoreland County.

According to police, happened around 4:30 a.m. along Route 981 at Substation Road in East Huntingdon Township.

Police say two people were ejected from the vehicle in the crash.

The victims have been identified as William Leighty Jr., 53, and his 29-year-old son, William Leighty III.

They were in a 2003 Chevrolet Avalanche when a Ford Ranger, driven by 61-year-old William Van Dyle, turned into their path and sent the vehicle rolling off the road.

"Obviously there was a fatal error by the person trying to turn left and continue on his travels," said State Police Tpr. Steve Limani.

William Leighty Jr. was pronounced dead at the scene, while his son died at a local hospital.

Investigators say neither were wearing their seat belts.

"We've had a rise, specifically at our barracks, with investigating fatal crashes over the last few months," said Limani.

Van Dyle told police he couldn't see the Leightys' truck headed toward him.

State Police are investigating the crash.
