Homestead Fire Forces Family From Home

HOMESTEAD (KDKA) - A family of three and a dog was forced from their home after a fire broke out early Thursday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the fire happened around 6 a.m. along West Locust Way in Homestead.

The family says they smelled smoke and knew it was time to get out.

A neighbor, who lives behind the house, captured some of the flames on a cell phone.

"Just heard a man screaming and banging, looked out the window [saw] a lot of smoke," he said.

Firefighters said they believe the fire started on the second floor of the home after a mattress somehow caught on fire.

The family says they're trying to determine what to do next because the damage is so severe they can't go back inside their home.
