New Zebra Exhibit At The Zoo Will Have You Seeing Black And White

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Something has been missing at the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium.

The answer's as plain as black and white. Zebras have been absent for more than four years, according to curator of mammals Ken Kaemmerer.

"We got them just a couple months ago, and this is their first opportunity to kind of kick up their heels and get out on he grass, and enjoy the fresh air, and enjoy the exhibit," he said.

Nine-month-old Spencer has some brown coloration. Twelve-month-old Penelope is what the curator calls a "more striking black and white."

They'll soon be sharing space with others -- the giraffes.

"The zebras will be out in the morning, up until about noon, then we'll take them back and let the giraffes have the exhibit in the afternoon," Kaemmerer explains. "And that's until we can introduce them in a few weeks"

The elephants will be living just next door. Exhibit areas are undergoing improvements, providing a better space for animals, and more visibility for humans.

"The public has been asking where are the zebras for the last four years," says the curator. "So now we have the zebras back, and people have been very excited to see them. And we're happy to have them back."
