Mt. Oliver Fire Destroys House, Leaves Family Displaced
MOUNT OLIVER (KDKA) – Flames spread through two homes in Mt. Oliver Saturday afternoon, leaving one couple homeless.
According to officials at the scene, the couple was grilling on the back deck when the fire broke out at 671 Margaret Street.
People miles away could see the thick grey smoke rising above the rooftops.
Neighbors went door to door telling residents to evacuate because they saw the flames quickly spreading.
“Knocking on the door. Banging on the door,” said one elderly woman. “We have to get you out! We got out and all the fire equipment was here. The police carried me to the front door.”
Derek Scheller was among the dozens of neighbors who watched as firefighters from at least nine departments battled the three-alarm blaze.
“I saw smoke at first coming down Margaret. When we got down here, both houses in the back were on fire,” Scheller said.
Gustavo Jimenez lives two houses away from where the fire broke out.
“It was bad. For a moment, I thought there were going to be more houses on fire than just those two,” Jimenez said.
The fire chief says the home at 671 Margaret is likely a total loss. The woman who lives next door will be able to move back in.
Fortunately, no one was injured.
