Newsradio 1020 KDKA Editorial: Ride Sharing Operations

Lyft and Uber –

The companies that let people summon rides through a smartphone app –

Can finally operate legally in Allegheny County –

At least for sixty days.

The state Public Utility Commission gave the ride-sharing companies temporary permits.

It means drivers don't have to worry about being cited –

And folks trying to get around have more options.

But the PUC still hasn't given the companies permanent permission to operate.

Uber has already had its hearing.

Lyft's hearing is set for Wednesday.

Both Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto –

And Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald –

Support the companies – saying they provide an important –

And much-needed transportation option.

Taxi companies in other cities have fought Uber and Lyft –

But Yellow Cab got creative –

And is launching its own ride-sharing service.

Competition gives people choices –

And technology helps drive innovation.

With that combination – everyone wins.
