Man Arrested After Shooting At Police & Fight With K-9

EAST LIBERTY (KDKA)- It was a wild scene in East Liberty on Wednesday, as police tried to track down a man carrying a gun.

According to police, the incident started with officers noticing a suspicious man walking along the 100-block of North Saint Clair Street around 5 p.m.

The man, 19-year-old Aaron Lamont Swan, Jr.,  turned the other direction when he noticed police. At that time, officers noticed he had a gun in his waistband.

A police officer made eye contact with Swan, who took off running. An officer got out of the cruiser and started chasing Swan through backyards.

The officer ordered Swan at gunpoint to stop, but he kept running.

"I was making a business phone call and I just casually glanced out the back window of my house and I saw something unusual," Anquelique Bamberg said. "I saw a pair of legs flipping over a back fence a couple houses down and realized it was unusual."

Bamberg says police searched her basement because they thought Swan got inside through an unlocked door, but he wasn't there.

After forcing his way through a shrub, the criminal complaint says Swan fell to the ground and fired off his pistol before taking off across the street toward Angelus Convalescent Center, a personal care home.

"That's not a pleasant situation for anyone, even if you're trained," Pittsburgh Police Public Information Officer Sonya Toler said.

Police say Swan jumped a fence and ran inside the personal care home. The criminal complaint goes on to say officers surrounded the building to make sure residents and staff were safe.

Police say Swan hid in the basement of the care home, fled back to a common hallway when he saw police, and eventually was confronted by two K-9 units.

The criminal complaint says Swan fought back against one of the police dogs by grabbing it's face. In return, the dog bit Swan several times.

He was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital for treatment before being transferred to the Allegheny County Jail.

Swan faces a long list of charges including escape, burglary, recklessly endangering another person and attacking a police dog.

No one inside the Angelus Convalescent Center was hurt.

Swan's preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 9 at 12:30 p.m.
