Parkway West Construction Zone About To Become Tighter Squeeze

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- An already tight squeeze in the construction zone on the Parkway West is about to get tighter as PennDOT gets ready to place more jersey barriers along the roadway Tuesday evening.

Drive through the construction zone and you feel it, watch from above and you see it. More drivers than not are hugging the center line to avoid the center jersey barrier.

So PennDOT is a bit concerned about what's to come.

"The barrier placement along the shoulder of the Parkway West will begin at 10 p.m.," said PennDOT District 11 spokesman Steve Cowan.

By barrier placement, Cowan means a jersey barrier right along the white line that currently marks the shoulder.

"It's going to feel narrow," said Cowan. "They are going to feel confined at least initially."

The initial placement of barriers will begin as you enter the outbound construction zone coming down Greentree Hill towards Carnegie.

PennDOT fully expects the even narrower looking cattle chute will prompt traffic to slow considerable, and there's concern about any kind of a breakdown or accident in the zone.

"The contractor is going to have a tow truck on scene in the work zone," said Cowan.
