CANTON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – A teenager was injured after falling off the roof of a moving vehicle in Washington County over the weekend.
The incident happened on Cortez Drive in Canton Township around 8 p.m. Saturday.
Robbie Linton’s stepfather told police the 17-year-old asked to ride on top of the vehicle. After some persuasion, the teenager was granted permission to ride on the roof while laying down.
“The stepson talked the stepfather into letting him ride on the rear bumper of the vehicle and hold on to the roof rack,” said PA State Police Trooper Matt Jardine.
As the stepfather turned onto Laddie Drive, the teen fell off and landed on the pavement.
“And hit his head and sustained head injuries as a result of falling off the vehicle,” said Jardine.
Internet videos have helped make a dangerous stunt known as “Car Surfing” popular.
Teenagers, mostly guys between 15 and 19 years old, have been risking life and limb since the mid-’80s.
“There was some people directing traffic – and uh there was a young man on the ground,” The sound of car door slamming and raised voices brought John Garcia out of his home.
The stepfather originally shot down the car surfing idea says Trooper Jardine.
“When he interviewed the stepfather he was very upset about the incident,” he said.
According to Garcia,”There was a lady attending to him, then the paramedics showed up about two minutes after I walked out.”
This investigation continues – if any charges are made they could range from a summary offense like careless driving to something more serious.
