Paul Chryst Details Replacement Plans For Injured Center Artie Rowell

PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - A trio of Pitt players were honored by the ACC Monday after the Panthers beat Boston College Friday night. Sophomore tailback James Conner was named the ACC's Offensive Back of the Week, senior tackle T.J. Clemmings was selected Offensive Lineman of the Week and sophomore kicker Chris Blewitt was named Specialist of the Week.

It's the second consecutive week Conner was honored. The Erie native rushed for 214 yards and a touchdown on 36 carries. Conner leads the ACC and ranks fourth nationally with an average of 183.5 yards per game.

Clemmings is an offensive captain and has helped Pitt amass 712 rushing yards in its first two games. Last week senior guard Matt Rotheram won the same award.

Blewitt hit a career-long 49-yard field goal, along with making kicks from 42 and 41 yards. Blewitt was also 3-of-3 on PATs.

New Center

Pitt head coach Paul Chryst said either sophomore Gabe Roberts or freshman Alex Officer will fill in for starter Artie Rowell, after a season-ending knee injury Friday.

"We'll practice them both," Chryst said. "Gabe did some good things (in the game vs. Boston College). We'll practice both of them this week."

Rowell is the second lineman Chryst has lost this year, the other being junior defensive lineman Ejuan Price.

"I feel bad for Ejuan and Artie (Rowell). Their window to play is a defined window and they're missing out on opportunities. And both of those guys love the game and love the team. We've got to find a way and it provides opportunities for other guys. I love the opportunity for other guys, but never at the cost of someone."

Game-time set

Pitt announced next Saturday's home game with Iowa will kick at noon. The Panthers are at Heinz Field, while the Pirates are home at 7 p.m. the same day.
