Scott Twp. Water Main Break Sends Water Shooting Into Air

SCOTT TOWNSHIP (KDKA)- Residents in Scott Township got a rude awakening Tuesday morning, after a water main break sprayed water 40-50 feet into the air.

According to officials at the scene, the break happened around 2:30 a.m. in the 1300-block of Meadowlark Drive, near St. Clair Hospital.

KDKA-TV was on the only crew on scene when water was spraying up into the air, which landed on several houses.

The water was finally shut off about an hour later by water crews. As of 6 a.m. crews were still at the scene working to fix the broken water pipe.

Neighbors up and down Meadowlark Drive were left without water service. Some said they thought it was actually raining outside, then they looked closer and noticed it was a water main break.

The break was actually right off of the street, between one homeowner's yard and a driveway.

One home was pelted by the water. The woman who owned that home recently passed away and her daughters were in the process of trying to sell it. They recently took it off the market to do some renovations.

There is no word on how much damage was done to the roof, windows and other exterior parts of the home. Pennsylvania American Water says it will take accountability.

"Our insurance company is on the way they will make the homeowner whole for any damage that happened as a result of the break," Pennsylvania American Water COmpany's Josephine Posti said.

Several other neighbors had water rushing down their windows, but their homes were not damaged.

Pennsylvania American Water Company crews say it will take close to eight hours for crews to restore an eight-inch cast iron line that broke.

Service is expected to be restored to 30 customers by Tuesday night.

The line is 70-80-years-old, which is typical of many lines running underneath homes in the South Hills.
