Police Investigating Fatal Braddock Shooting

BRADDOCK (KDKA) – Police are investigating after a young man was found shot to death in Braddock early Wednesday morning.

According to police, the body was found on the sidewalk near the intersection of Corey Avenue and Overland Street around 5:10 a.m.

Police initially responded to that area shortly after 2 a.m. for a report of shots being fired, but did not find anything.

"A couple hours later, the person on their way to work discovered the young man on the side of the road, who apparently suffered some gunshot wounds," Allegheny County Police Lt. Andrew Schurman said.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identifies the victim as 16-year-old Vernon Rogers of East Liberty.

The mayor said he was disappointed when he heard the news.

"This has been an extraordinarily quiet summer for us here in Braddock. It's been an incredibly quiet year. Sometime early this morning, something slipped in. I certainly regret we weren't able to stop it from happening," Mayor John Fetterman said.

Robert Hester has lived in the area for 32 years. He says he heard between seven and nine gunshots go off early in the morning.

"It was truly a scary sight and a scary area to be in to have something like this happen," Fester said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Allegheny County Police Homicide Unit at (412)-473-1300.
