Man Killed In Westmoreland Co. Pedestrian Accident

SEWICKLEY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – Westmoreland County authorities say David Pedder, 54, of North Huntingdon Township, was lying in the northbound lane of Lowber Road in Sewickley Township, when he was struck and killed by a car.

The accident happened in front of Yough High School at 1:38 a.m. Pedder was pronounced dead at the scene around 2:53 a.m.

Pedder used to live at Markhaven Apartments in Irwin. Former neighbor and good friend Diane Zanos says she is shocked at the news.

She says Pedder used to the live in the apartment building about a year ago. She used to cook for him and he helped others out daily. He lived alone and recently moved to Herminie.

"He had a good heart, a very good heart. And he loved people and children," Zanos said.

"He was a super guy. Anytime I would pull up with groceries, he would be the first one off the bench to come help," former neighbor James Nichols said.

Officials say the driver of the car reported seeing what appeared to be an object in the road. The car swerved, but hit Pedder's torso and head.

State Police said the driver stopped and called 911. Pedder's old neighbors aren't sure why he was lying in the road.

"Everybody liked him. He had a positive attitude," Nichols said. "He never really bothered anybody. Even though he did the things he did, had a beer or two, he minded his own business."

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday and toxicology results will not be available for several weeks.

Kutch Funeral Home of East McKeesport will be handling funeral arrangements.
