Thousands Participate In North Park Ovarian Cancer Walk

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Every year at this time, we remember our late colleague and friend Yvonne Zanos.

We lost her to ovarian cancer four years ago, but she was on the minds of many at North Park Sunday as they walked to break the silence on ovarian cancer.

More than 2,500 walkers and runners took to the path around North Park Lake to raise money and remind women to look out for the symptoms of ovarian cancer.

"Oftentimes we don't catch the disease until it's in its later stages, when there isn't as great a prognosis than if we find it in the early stages," Megan Murphy of the Ovarian Cancer Coalition said.

Five years ago, Joyce Simons was diagnosed in the early stages and survived.

"If you're feeling bloated, if you are feeling pain. If any of your symptoms persist for two weeks or more, please contact your doctor," Simons said.

Nearly 19 years ago, we almost lost our assignment editor Olga George. However, she's still here and we're very glad she is.

"It was caught early enough - surgery, chemotherapy, and here I am," she said.

Ovarian cancer is not just a women's disease. It affects the whole family and if not caught early enough, it could take someone special away from you.
