Missing Jack Russell Terrier From Pa. Turns Up In Oregon

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Gidget is finally going home.

The stray Jack Russell terrier ended up in a shelter near Portland, Oregon. Workers there scanned her microchip and got a huge shock; her owners are in Pennsylvania.

"We don't know what her story is, but it seems to sound kind of like a Disney movie," says Deborah Wood, the manager of Portland's Animal Services.

Wood says Gidget was found wandering the streets, just one of the 4,000 strays they see each year.

But, Wood says, "We actually feel she probably wins the award for the one who came the farthest."

Gidget's microchip was registered to an address near Philadelphia. Her owners were shocked to get a call from Oregon.

"The owner was in Pennsylvania saying, "My dog is where?!" said Wood.

Apparently, Gidget escaped from her home around Easter. But no one knows how she got to Portland.

"They were certainly relieved and worried," Wood said of Gidget's owners.

And the owners were smart. Wood says the microchip company had their current address. She says many pet owners forget to update their information.

The dog will be flown back to Pennsylvania soon.
