Oktoberfest Celebrations Are Here

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio1020 KDKA) - Oktoberfest is the world's largest funfair, held every year in Germany. The festivities last 16 days beginning in late September and ending in early October.

Just because the original Oktoberfest is in Germany doesn't mean that people all over the world do not partake in festivities and enjoy themselves. Even restaurants get in on the fun, serving up some Oktoberfest dishes. Atria's has a secret weapon this year: Josef Karst, Atria's chef.

Josef is born, raised and trained in Germany, so it is safe to say that cooking up food representing Oktoberfest and the German culture is his specialty. He joined Bill Rehkopf on the KDKA Afternoon News to give us all the info on Oktoberfest here and in Germany. Everyone has their own ideas as to what Oktoberfest is but Karst sets the record straight letting people know it's not all about beer guzzling and gorging on food.

"It's a whole lot more than that, and they have this big parade starting into Oktoberfest, all the different trades of the city of Munich are coming together and marching through the streets. Of course the five major breweries of Munich are represented," Karst explained, "It's a big celebration and the entire world is invited."

Chef Karst let us in on some of his cooking secrets and tips that way you can partake in your own Oktoberfest. Karst even told us of his favorite type of thing to cook when he is cooking for his family.

"Simple, easy food like we do here at Oktoberfest. You know it's a lot of preparation time and I like to call it not really a recipes it's more like a procedure," Karst said.

You can hear the whole interview with Chef Joesf Karst below and check out his dishes currently served at Atria's Restaurants.
