Steelers Rookies Lift Spirits With Visit To Children's Hospital

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It may not be the thunderous applause of Heinz Field, but it's every bit as heartfelt.

Young patients at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh applauded as Steelers rookies jog into the hospital playroom.

Meanwhile, 9-year-old Faith Custer of Somerset gets a "makeover" from a face paint artist. Her mother, Kathy Custer, says Faith doesn't miss a game on TV.

"She's just so excited to meet all of them," she said. "Any of them. She's never been to a game either, but one day we're going to get there."

For the moment, defensive end Fosh Mauro is man of the hour, as he signs an autograph.

"We're all really blessed to be in the positions we're in," he says. "And then getting to come here, you know, and just see kids, and see people of all ages, and just getting to make them smile, it's a blessing and a special opportunity."

Wide receiver Dri Archer makes friends with young Jonathan Abson of South Carolina. As for being drafed by the Steelers, he says, "I feel great. I know I'm coming into a great organization, with a great coaching staff and great players around me."

It's an exciting moment for Jonathan's mother, Betty Myers.

"When I get back home," she says, "'I'm going to tell my uncle, look, I was sitting at the table with the rookies from the Pittsburgh Steelers,' and he is going to be so excited."

For some of the younger kids, the face painting and the games are actually more impressive than the Steelers themselves. But, thanks to photographs and autographs they take with them, they'll have memories that last a lifetime.
