Wexford's New Medical Mall Is Latest Innovation In Health Care

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- For an area known for strip malls, the new kid on the block is a medical mall.

The Allegheny Health Network is opening its Health and Wellness Pavilion on Perry Highway in Wexford on Oct. 1.

Here you can get primary care, a heart center, women's health, sports medicine, medical imaging and more.

"Anything that doesn't require you to be overnight in the hospital, you can access here," says Dr. Susan Manzi of the Allegheny Health Network.

And like a mall, there's free parking and an Austin's Playroom where you can drop off the kids while you see your doctor.

"A café, there's walking trails if you're waiting for someone having services done here, and even meditation gardens. So it's all about wellness, and keeping you well," says Dr. Manzi.

One big focus is cancer care, featuring the high-tech. For example, a linear accelerator for highly-focused radiation therapy, and the soft-tech like an open, naturally-lighted chemotherapy suite where blinds and partitions can be raised and lowered.

This facility is aiming to be patient center, and that includes new chairs in the exam rooms. They come with heat and massage.

It fully reclines into an exam table.

If you're worried about your brand of insurance?

"Allegheny Health Network is willing to accept any insurance," Dr. Manzi says.

While the health system's former iteration struggled financially, the $100 million project was made possible by AHN's new structure.

"Our partner, Highmark and Highmark Health has played a big role in contributing to this," she says. "They want high quality, low cost care, but they also want to get to people before they get sick. Let's keep them well, and that's really the focus of this program."
