Tow Truck Runs Over Driver, Crashes Into Beltzhoover Building

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A man was injured when he was run over by his own tow truck that was hauling a car in Beltzhoover Wednesday afternoon.

According to emergency dispatchers, the incident happened at the intersection of Estella Avenue and Climax Street shortly after 2 p.m.

The victim and his friend were reportedly using the tow truck to haul around a car he had just purchased at an auction. The truck had been parked in the middle of Estella Street when the driver said the parking chock cracked and the shifter broke, sending the truck down hill.

"The linkages broke on the car, on the tow truck, so quite naturally it drifted forward and just started going," said Mark Krasausaky, a witness.

The man started to run after it when the tow truck hit the curb and ran over him.

"He's running beside it, running beside it, trying to get in it to stop it and got run over by his own truck on that sidewalk," Krasausaky said.

The truck then hit a vacant home, causing a partially collapse.

"Sounded like a bomb hit the side of the house," said William Brown, another witness.

The victim was conscious and talking at the scene. He was taken to UPMC Mercy Hospital for treatment.

The runaway truck also struck another man in the leg. He was also taken to the hospital.
