McGuire Memorial Continues To Make a Difference For Those In Need

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) – Everyday, McGuire Memorial in New Brighton helps those in need. Their mission is to serve children and adults who have severe physical and intellectual disabilities, including those on the autism spectrum.

Sister Mary Thaddeus is the President and CEO of McGuire Memorial. She joined the "KDKA Morning News" to explain how they make a difference in the lives of those in need.

McGuire has been around for over 50 years and was started by the Felician Sisters for a specific reason.

"There were programs for families who had children who were born with moderate to mild intellectual disabilities, but there were no programs for children who were born with multiple handicaps," Sister Thaddeus said. "The mission of the Felician Sisters is always to be available where there is an identified need and our sisters recognize [children with multiple disabilities] as an identified need."

McGuire Memorial is available to families who have needs that go beyond what parents can handle.

"A lot of the parents make efforts to keep their children at home, but as soon as there is a second child that is born, it creates additional tension for the family," Sister Thaddeus said. "McGuire's goal has always been not only just to care for the child that's entrusted to us, but also to care about the family."

McGuire is there to help both children and adults.

"When you come to McGuire to visit, you don't have to worry about the medical needs [and] you don' have to worry about them choking if you feed them," Sister Thaddeus said.
