PITTSBURGH (KDKA)- Pittsburgh Police need your help tracking down a man who reached over a counter and stole a store’s cash box.
According to police, the theft happened on Sept. 14 at the Pittsburgh News on Sixth Street in downtown Pittsburgh. Police released surveillance video of the incident Tuesday night.
The video shows a man distracting the clerks and looking over the counter. When the clerks were occupied, he reached over the counter and grabbed a cigar box that contained an unspecified amount of cash.
The owner of Pittsburgh News said $2,000 was inside the stolen cigar box.
“He asked me to get three hats. I got it out. He said he needed the jersey as well. I ran inside just for a few seconds. By the time I come back he already managed to pull the box from the side,” the store owner said. “[About] 15 minutes later, I had a customer who wanted something and needed change. As I’m pulling for change, then I realize, where’s the money box? Where’s the money box?” she said.
She says she viewed surveillance video, saw the theft then called 911.
Several customers were in the store before the theft happened.
“It’s only been 16 days and I’m sure releasing this video will help jar some memories,” Pittsburgh Police Spokesperson Sonya Toler said.
The suspect is a tall African-American man, wearing a blue coat and a gray Pirates hat.
A woman was also caught on surveillance, pretending to browse in the store before taking off with the man.
She’s described as a white woman with blond hair, wearing tan pants and a purple top.
The woman in question quickly followed the man out of the store.
If you see either of these suspects you are asked to call Zone 2 Detectives at (412)-255-2828.
