Suspect Dies After Chase, Shootout With Police

EAST HUNTINGDON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – State Police in Westmoreland County are looking into a high-speed chase and deadly shooting.

The chase ended along South Quarry Road in East Huntingdon Township just after 9 p.m. Wednesday.

According to police, Ryan Senko, 22, of Mt. Pleasant, led police on a chase through three townships.

KDKA's Amy Wadas Reports:

Police issued a "be on the lookout" alert for a mental health warrant that had been obtained by Senko's mother.

Senko was reportedly driving an SUV and had recently purchased a firearm.

Police said Senko and his girlfriend had recently broken up. Senko was believed to be actively looking for her at the University of Pittsburgh Greensburg campus.

A short time later, university police contacted State Police to let them know they spotted Senko and were involved in a chase.

"We were notified by Pitt at Greensburg that they had observed a vehicle matching his description bearing that registration," said Trooper Steve Limani, of Pennsylvania State Police.

During the chase, Senko almost hit a school bus as well as other cars.

Daniel Garstecki, of Tarrs, said he was on his way home from church with his wife and four children, when he was almost hit during the chase.

"The car came and just missed us. There were four children in the back. Three police cars came through and they just – [My wife] thought each one was going to hit her. We got through without a scratch," Garstecki said.

KDKA's Lynne Hayes-Freeland Reports:

The pursuit ended near Senko's house on South Quarry Street in East Huntingdon Township.

According to police, Senko fired his gun. At that time, a trooper returned fire.

Senko was pronounced dead a short time later.

"Our suspect had a hand gun displayed; he discharged that handgun and our officer returned fire, and the suspect was dead at the scene," said Trooper Limani.

It is still unclear whether Senko was shot by police or if he shot himself.
