Police: Grandmother Left 1-Year-Old Home Alone To Go Out For Drinks

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A Pittsburgh grandmother is facing charges after police say she left her 1-year-old granddaughter home alone in the middle of the night to have drinks with a man.

Officers were called to Stacey Shannon's apartment in the 1800-block of Colwell Street just after midnight Wednesday to check on her and her granddaughter's well-being. She had been babysitting the girl.

Investigators say the Shannon's daughter called police because she was unable to get in touch with her mother.

The criminal complaint reports police knocked on Shannon's door and went around to a window to try and get inside. Finally, Shannon's other daughter was called to bring a key.

When they got inside, police say they found the little girl all alone, asleep on the couch in the living room.

While police were investigating, the criminal complaint reports Shannon returned to the apartment with a man around 1:15 a.m.

According to the criminal complaint, Shannon told police she had been "drinking and sitting on the wall on Fifth Avenue" near a bus stop. She had given the child pizza and soda before she left.

Shannon also said she didn't know how long she had left the child by herself, the criminal complaint reports.

She is facing one count of endangering the welfare of children.
