Baby Can't Wait For Hospital, Mom Gives Birth In Parking Lot

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Kristy and Guy Johns welcomed their third son into the world Friday.

They arrived at Forbes Hospital in their van, but the delivery did not go as planned.

Little Maxwell came out 7 pounds 12 ounces and 19 inches long. His mom, Kristy, was scheduled to be induced at Forbes Hospital at 7 a.m.

"Probably about 20 minutes before we were to arrive here, I felt a pop," Kristy said, "which was my water and I told him, I didn't think we were going to quite make it."

They made it to the parking lot, right outside the emergency department. But going inside was not an option.

"My husband told me to hold him in, he kept telling me to hold him in and I said I can't," Kristy said.

"I just pulled up, opened the door and ran in and said my wife is having a baby out here in the car," said Guy. "Then she said 'grab a wheelchair,' so I came out and she said she couldn't get up. The baby's head was coming out and I came back in and told them to hurry up."

The team at Forbes quickly jumped into action, rushing outside. And at 6:50 a.m., Maxwell made his debut, with mom right in the passenger seat of the family's minivan.

"Can't complain," Kristy said. "It was nice and quick. I can't complain about that part."

Doctors and nurses at Forbes have been in similar situations before with babies just not willing to wait.

"We plan for these types of events and we do walk through the events and when these things happen, to me, it's just a testament to getting ready, being prepared and our staff did an excellent job," said Janine Valko with Forbes Hospital.

Mom, dad and baby are all resting comfortably now.

And as for Maxwell's middle name – Kristy says, "we kind of decide on Parker, on account of it being right out in the parking lot."
