Man Burned, Couple Escape From 2nd Story Window In New Brighton Fire

BEAVER COUNTY (KDKA) – Two homes were damaged and at least one person injured after fire broke out in Beaver County.

Officials say they believe it started in the garage of a house on 5th Avenue in New Brighton around 8 a.m.

The first house was destroyed by the flames and the back of a second house sustained heavy damage.

"Smoke, a lot of fire crackling, popping," said neighbor Steve Turnbull. "It was going pretty good by the time the fire department got here."

Four people were inside one of the homes when the fire started – one of whom was taken to the hospital with burns.

Neighbor McKayla Scott will never forget the sight of one of the residents running from the house.

"He came running out, his arm was on fire, so he rolled on the ground," said Scott. "Honestly, I didn't see much because I was running after the ambulance to get him."

The man suffered burns on his shoulder, wrist and elbow. No information is available on his condition.

Meanwhile, a couple who lived there did not want to be identified, but said they were trapped after flames spread to the second floor.

"We were about to go down the steps, you couldn't see and couldn't breath," one said.

That's when a good Samaritan drove by, offering to help them escape. They climbed onto the roof, over the front porch and dropped down to the top of his pickup.

"I crawled out the window," the man said. "I could see her freaking out, because of how far of a drop it was going to be to jump from the second story roof down to the ground."

No word on how the fire started.
