Police Investigating Fatal Hill District Shooting

HILL DISTRICT (KDKA) –Police are investigating after a high school student was shot and killed in the Hill District Wednesday morning.

According to police, the shooting happened on Morgan Street around 7 a.m.

Eric Young, 17, exited his house and was shot three times. He was a senior at Pittsburgh Milliones and his mother was nearby ready to take him to school.

"His mother, who was with him, tried to revive him, but he was pronounced dead on scene," Pittsburgh Police Spokeswoman Sonya Toler said.

According to a statement from Pittsburgh Public Schools, Young was new to the school this year.

"Eric is described by staff as a student who was popular with his peers and always had a smile on his face. While he did not play for the school's football team, he loved playing football. Eric was very excited about a job he just recently attained at a local supermarket," the statement said.

Counselors will be at the school today and Thursday to help students.

Meanwhile, community leaders are pleading for the violence to stop.

"This kind of senseless killing has to stop. Four years ago Oct. 17, I lost my son the same way. I wouldn't wish this pain on any parent," Wesley Center Ame Zion Church Rev. Glenn Grayson said.

No arrests have been made at this time, but police say they believe Young knew the shooter.
