Carrick Shooting Leaves 1 Man Dead

CARRICK (KDKA) – Police are investigating after a shooting left one person dead in Carrick Monday morning.

According to officials at the scene, the shooting happened at the intersection of Brownsville Road and Birmingham Avenue around 7 a.m.

Police say a sanitation worker parked his car on Birmingham Avenue to meet his garbage truck to do curbside pickups. While he was waiting, he was gunned down.

Neighbors along Brownsville Road heard an explosion of gunfire.

"First, we heard about five. Then, it got quiet for a second. Then, we heard six more. I [saw] everybody start running and ducking behind cars and cars were taking off," Justin Lachoppa said.

When it was over, a 28-year-old Omar Hodges was found wounded in the street. He was rushed to UPMC Mercy Hospital, where he died.

"Some people, or a person in a vehicle, opened fire on one of our garbage workers and shot up his car 12 times, our employee was struck," Pittsburgh Police Spokeswoman Sonya Toler said.

Hodges was hired by the city in January of 2013. So far, very little information has been released.

Police are looking for a car that was seen speeding away after the shooting.

"All we know is the vehicle that the shots came from and that is a silver Nissan Altima, four door and we have no idea how many or what the people look like inside," Toler said.

Mayor Bill Peduto released a statement Monday afternoon.

"I am deeply saddened by the death today of a worker in the city's Environmental Services bureau. I know I join thousands of fellow workers and residents across the city keeping his family in their thoughts and prayers," the statement said.
