Hundreds Of Volunteers Build Playground On North Side

NORTH SIDE (KDKA) - Hundreds of volunteers joined forces to build a brand new playground on the North Side.

The area was just an open, empty space a little while ago. In just about six hours, volunteers transformed it into a perfect playground.

About 200 volunteers are worked hard to create a magical place for kid along California Avenue.

"This is our community. So, we live here, we work here and this place really needs a playground. There's about 800 children who will benefit from this playground. They really don't have any great places to play," Kevin McKnight with ALCOA said.

The crew is made up of volunteers from the ALCOA Foundation and the community.

An organization called Kaboom, is heading up the project.

"People are making new friends. They are working hard together and just making that connection as they are building this playground," Kaboom's Alison McRae said.

"The kids need to see people that are their neighbors and their parents creating a space for them to play, and I think it provides some inspiration for them to show that people from this community really, really care about the kids that live here," Angel Gober with the North Side Coalition For Fair Housing, said.

The kids in the community have been involved since the beginning. In fact, they actually helped to design the playground.

"They came out seven or eight weeks ago. They designed their perfect playground and then, the experts kind of went back and constructed it just like the kids had imagined it and now, we are going to bring it to life. So, it's really an exciting project," McKnight said.
