Bomb Threat Prompts Increased Security Presence At Norwin HS

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - A bomb threat was found in a bathroom at Norwin High School Monday afternoon. As a result of the threat, increased security will be present at the school all day Tuesday.

"We just wanted to be proactive and make sure everyone was safe," Assistant Superintendent Tracy McNelly said.

McNelly said a bomb threat was discovered Monday. It was scribbled in a bathroom stall of the high school and said there would be a bomb today.

Police were notified and reacted quickly. They searched the entire building, secured it through the night and did another sweep Tuesday morning.

"It's important that we send a strong message that this is a serious matter and the safety and well-being of our students and our staff is the most important thing that we do," McNelly said.

In an email to parents, district officials said while nothing was found, if parents still felt uncomfortable, students could stay home today. It would also be an excused absence.

The district said attendance was lower today, but many still came to school.

"I'm not worried at all. I think the school is addressing it, doing everything they need to do. It's probably just some kid who's trying to get attention or get out of school. And it didn't work," Jennifer Hicks, a parent, said.

Meanwhile, officials are trying to identify the person responsible for the threat.

"Our principals are going to continue to look through the tapes today and interview students, if needed. If we find someone who might be responsible, the police will be called and be involved and we'll follow our disciplinary procedures," McNelly said.

District officials said it is not likely they will have increased security at the high school on Wednesday.

However, they did say that police routinely check the building and grounds.
