Woman Hospitalized After Man's Alleged Heinz Field Tirade
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Melissa Yancec never saw it coming.
The impact form the heavy steel dividers outside of Heinz Field knocked her out cold.
She has cuts, bruises and severe swelling on her face, head, neck and back.
She was sitting on the pavement in front of one of the barriers when Stephen Sapp allegedly kicked it out of the ground. But she didn't know anything about Sapp and his scuffle with police until Monday.
"I woke up in a hospital with no answers, you know. Then come to find out my girlfriend texts me, I get a message saying 'you were on the news,' an incident, that's how I found out what happened to me.
I'm still like, I could cry. It's like, who does that? Who does that? I mean, I could have been dead, you know. Explain to my 2-year-old daughter why mommy isn't around anymore," said Yancec.
The criminal complaint says before that, Sapp was violent, throwing steel dividers after being ejected from the game. Later, he reportedly tried to bribe the arresting officers.
According to the criminal complaint, Sapp stated, "Listen, I know how this works. How much money will it take to make this go away and to let me go home today?"
The officers informed Sapp that he could not attempt to bribe them, but Sapp continued.
"Look, I am an IRS agent and I can help you in other ways if you let me go home and make this go away."
But he didn't go home. He went to jail with several charges filed against him.
"It changes things when you realize it wasn't an accident," said Yancec's finace Michael Strack. "Yeah, it totally changes everything."
